Music: The Vibe According To… Nonso Amadi and Khalid

Nono Amadi (@Nonso_A) When the 21 year-old, Nigerian-Canadian (Canadian-Nigerian) released “Radio” produced by Juls I just had a feeling that 2017 will turn out to be this young man’s year. My Twitter TL is a testament to this. I discovered his music by chance, last summer, while watching the Nigerian web series “Discovering ABJ” (episode 5) by Nappy Media. Thankfully his music was Shazam-able and available on iTunes and Soundcloud. I ended up downloading his songs “Tonight” and “Gele” and if you follow me on Snapchat, you would have heard me play these songs a couple times. Check out his song “Radio” and enjoy his laid-back-Naija-RnB sound. Khalid (@thegreatkhalid) Another young artist, at 18 is Khalid. This guy’s voice is very mature (if that’s a way to describe someone’s vocal ability). I stumbled on his music by way of Twitter-ville and his song “Saved” was added to my Soundcloud playlist immediately. Having heard his other songs on YouTube (“Coaster” is repeat worthy 👌🏾), I will be getting his album, “American Teen“, due to be released 3rd March 2017. I’m …

Music: Five Vibes Vol. 1

My first music post this year! Back in December I decided to spend an evening sharing music via Snapchat and it was suggested that I start Spotify Playlists… but like many things that don’t work here (i.e. Facetime), creating Spotify Playlists won’t be possible right now. Till then I’ll be sharing five songs I’m enjoying in any given week (they won’t necessarily be ‘new’ songs either). Enjoy.✌🏾 “Pain Killer” by @sarkodie & @iRuntown has me wishing I took my best friend seriously when she said I should know how to speak #Twi by now — Olayide M. (@OlayideM)February 8, 2017 “Pain Killer” by Sarkodie feat. Runtown “Temper” Remix by Skales feat. Burna Boy “Prayer” by DMW feat. Davido & Mayrokun “Fancy U” by Chike* “Ahaa” by Tim Godfrey & Xtreme  (Saints dabbin’ their way into heaven these days – Listen to this song with some good headphones!) All songs listed are available to purchase on iTunes.   Do you have any suggestions of artists to I should know of? Let me know! I’m always on the look out for ‘new’ …

Music: Everything Adekunle Touches is Gold

Release Date: 28 July 2016 | Record Label: YBNL The last week of July Adekunle Gold released his especially anticipated album, aptly named ‘Gold’. I remember sending a text to my friend, asking her to be my voice reason when it came to spending money on iTunes to buy this album (I just moved and every penny counted towards my days ahead so I held off on buying it then). Fast forward weeks later, not only have I purchased the album, but I also let Adekunle Gold know that there was an imposter lurking on iTunes (some brave fellow put his album up with a voice over all over the songs).** BUT since purchasing the album it has been on repeat. I like this album because… I tweeted what I liked most about the album and that was the element of storytelling. If you don’t already know I’m somewhat of a storyteller too (without the musical production) and for this reason I find the album extremely ‘easy’ to listen to and get lost in. His storytelling …

Music: The Vibe According To… Afro-Beats

This time last week Ice Prince made a fan out of me because of his verse on Di’ja‘s ‘Yaro Remix’ and in the same week he was close to losing me as a fan after he released ‘N-word Remix’ featuring AKA ~ let me just *side-eye* the song and the video. If it isn’t apparent already, I hold a soft spot for the genre of music otherwise known as AfroBeats. From old skool *Styl-Plus and their ‘Olufunmi’ saga and 2Face‘s ‘African Queen’ classic that had my 16 year-old self ask my friend to “bluetooth” the song to me; or the Christmas my aunt and I SCREAMED Lagbaja‘s ‘Never Far Away’ to each other in attempts to recreate the melodious duet (we failed). Today we appreciate Asa‘s Yoruba one-liner in her song ‘Be My Man’ while we connect iPhones to car stereos nodding our heads to the likes of Burna Boy‘s “island-influenced” flow. I have also suddenly found myself caught in the Wizkid fan-trap (still trying to understand how I got here ~ darn that ‘Pakurumo’ song) and oh there’s dimpled-faced Davido with …
